A background role is any non-speaking role in a film, television show, or commercial.
Sometimes background roles are featured, special ability, core (they come back in that same role for several days within the same production) and sometimes they are part of large crowds.
Restaurant Patrons, Security Guards, Bartenders, Passerbys, Party Goers, Students, and so many more roles.
Watch a film and notice all those lovely folks that do not speak however add that extra special touch to make the scene REAL.
