For kids (minors) completing an I-9 employment form, the requirements are slightly different than for adults because children usually don’t have all the same ID documents. Here’s what’s accepted:
Option 1: One document from List A
(Establishes both identity and employment authorization)
U.S. Passport or Passport Card
Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
Employment Authorization Document (EAD) with photo (rare for minors)
Option 2: One from List B
(Identity)
and one from List C
(Work authorization)
List B (Identity – for minors under 18 who don’t have ID):
School record or report card
Clinic, doctor, or hospital record
Daycare or nursery school record
(Normally adults must show photo ID like a driver’s license, but minors under 18 can use the above instead.)
List C (Work Authorization):
U.S. Social Security card (not marked “Not valid for employment”)
Original or certified birth certificate issued by a U.S. state, county, or municipality
Certificate of U.S. Citizenship or Naturalization
